Training Groups/Schools

Sayoc LA

Training Groups/ Associated Schools

The following is to establish the relationships and necessary protocols concerning training, curriculum, ranking, and responsibilities of the training groups and associated schools under Sayoc LA. These will be in effect after October 2009.

Sayoc LA

Sayoc LA is the senior Sayoc organization in the southern California area. It is led by and consists of Gurus Joey Pena and Travis Downing.

Sayoc LA is responsible for establishing the curriculum, training material, rank and training guidelines for the training groups and associated schools. Sayoc LA will establish requirements for rank within the organization; ensure training standards are met and students throughout Sayoc LA are developing extremely high levels of competence.

The curriculum established is a well-rounded system, drawing from Sayoc Kali/Silak, Atienza Kali, and Inosanto/Lacoste Kali. We will also use information from the following combative sports; Combat Submission Wrestling, Thai Boxing, Western Boxing, Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The training methodology and developmental psychology of the group is predominantly Sayoc. All material is taught with a Feeder mindset with intent to be used in a street/real world combative application. We do not teach for competition but we will draw from combative sports as it suits our needs.

The material taught by Sayoc LA includes the basics of each System. Learning the established curriculum will give the student a solid foundation upon which he or she can build

Students will be eligible to test for rank under Sayoc LA, Sayoc Kali, Atienza Kali, and Inosanto Kali, and Filipino Combatives as their skill level becomes appropriate.

Sayoc LA training will occur of once a week. During this session information and techniques will be covered. Students will be evaluated regarding performance of the material previously covered. Students are encouraged to ask questions they have about the material during this time. Sayoc LA training sessions are open to all current members of Sayoc Kali and Sayoc LA. Non-members may train only with approval of either Guru Joey or Guru Travis.

Associated Schools

Once a member has achieved the rank of associate instructor in any system taught, he or she is can open his own school and begin instruction on his own. The instructor has the choice to remain associated with Sayoc LA or to maintain an affiliation solely with the parent system. If the associate instructor chooses to remain affiliated with Sayoc LA he or she is required to have students. The number of student(s) and location is up to the instructor. The associate instructor is responsible for creating his own curriculum, schedule and student development/ranking plan. All students at associated schools must maintain current Sayoc memberships.

Training Groups

Simply put, a training group is two or more individuals who get together with some regularity to train. Sanctioned training groups exist solely at the discretion of Sayoc International Group and Sayoc LA. Training group leaders are chosen and subject to change based on performance and group dynamics. At the training group level, all members are responsible for the performance of the group. Training groups work under the close direction and supervision of Sayoc LA, but, decisions on where to train, when to train, and how often are left to the group. Members are encouraged to create a functional group dynamic that is capable of handling group responsibilities and develops superior practitioners. Training fees are decided within the group. Any money collected by the training group must go towards training and or equipment. No training group member can personally profit from fees collected in the training group. All members of a training group must be current members of Sayoc International. Sayoc training groups must follow the protocols set by the Sayoc organization.

Practitioners

A practitioner is any current member, whether attached to a training group, associated school, or unattached. All practitioners are highly encouraged to become members of training groups or associated schools. Practitioners are encouraged to train with different groups and instructors as long as they can meet can fulfill any obligations to the group/school to which they are attached. Practitioners are also encouraged to seek out other members for individual training. A wise student realizes that he can only be as good as the people he trains with and takes responsibility for his training partners progress.

Monthly Gathering

The monthly gathering is when all members of Sayoc LA come together for training. It will consist of a training session followed by a meal and social interaction. Responsibility for the monthly gathering will be rotated between training groups and schools.

Overview

It is our intention to get away from the traditional mindset of “if I show up fairly regularly on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 I’ll get my green belt in 6 months and in 3 years I’ll have my black belt and be an instructor.” We are interested in developing men and women who take the initiative and accept the responsibility for their own progress. Progress is solely a function of the amount of work the practitioner is willing to do.

We will provide the information and curriculum in the weekly sessions. It is up to the practitioner to get his practice time in. This can be in his or her associated school, training group, or individual training.

Rank is based on knowledge of the curriculum, ability to perform the drills and techniques, and application. Of the three, application is the most important. Application of the methodology and technology both in class and out is taken into consideration.
